This 38-year-old woman has a 15-year-old niece who is seriously spoiled by her brother and sister-in-law.
Apparently, her niece is both an only child as well as the first grandchild that her parents ever had. So, her brother, sister-in-law, and even her own parents have gotten her niece everything since she was a little girl– never telling her niece the word “no.”
Now that her niece is a teen, though, she claims the spoiling has made her a complete nightmare to be around.
Everyone just basically gives her whatever she wants because, you know, ‘She’s the baby,’” she explained.
On the other hand, she and her husband– who is 42– have chosen not to have children. And since they have both built solid careers, they are pretty well-off.
It is also important to note that she has always had an expensive fashion taste– enjoying high-quality clothing, bags, and jewelry. After all, she doesn’t have any childcare expenses hanging over her head, so why not, right?
Just a few weeks ago, though, she and her husband decided to visit her parent’s home for a family lunch. And her niece, brother, and sister-in-law attended, too
Since her niece’s birthday was quickly approaching, most of the conversations wound up being about that. At one point, her parents also decided to ask what her niece wanted for her birthday this year.
And to her total surprise, her niece ultimately asked for a specific designer bag that cost a whopping $2,200!
Obviously, her parents were shell-shocked, too, and sort of began laughing while explaining how that was a bit excessive. Her parents also made it clear that there was no way they would spend that much money on just a bag.
Rather than letting that sink in, though, her niece just immediately turned her attention to her and her husband.
Then, her niece said, “Well, you guys can get it for me then. You’re rich, but yet you always get me cheap gifts.”
She and her husband were utterly shocked after hearing that, especially because they never got her any “cheap gifts.” Regardless, they just could not believe how entitled and ungrateful her niece was acting.
“Also, the sheer audacity of a 15-year-old demanding I get her a thousand-dollar bag,” she added.
But, instead of reprimanding her niece, her sister-in-law actually jumped in to back her niece up! Apparently, her sister-in-law pointed out how she “flaunts” all of her own nice bags around her niece– which is only going to make her niece want one.
In other words, her sister-in-law basically insinuated that since she “made her bed,” she needed to “lie in it” and buy her niece the bag.
Anyway, by the time the family lunch ended, her niece and sister-in-law apparently assumed they had guilt-tripped her into purchasing the bag. But, if that’s what they thought, then they were seriously wrong.
Instead, as soon as she got home, she decided to visit a designer dupe wholesale website and ordered a knock-off version of the bag for $60.
Then, once the bag arrived about two weeks later, she just wrapped it up as usual and showed up with it at her niece’s birthday party.
Now, when her niece first saw the present, she apparently got super excited and ripped open the gift immediately. But then, her niece’s face fell after she saw what was actually inside.
According to her, it was obvious that the bag was just a dupe. So, her niece turned bright red and asked, “What is this? Is this a joke?”
She didn’t back down, though, and told her niece it was not a joke.
“No, this is your gift. Maybe in the future, you should be grateful for the gifts we get you. It’s not the price that matters; it’s the thought,” she added.
At that point, her niece burst into tears and called her and her husband “embarrassing” and “cheap.” Her sister-in-law told her off, too.
So, ever since the birthday party, her brother, sister-in-law, and parents have all accused her of letting her niece down. They also believe that she needs to apologize.
However, she honestly thinks that her niece needs to be humbled. On top of that, she believes her niece is the one who owes her and her husband an apology after demanding that they buy the expensive bag in the first place.
Nonetheless, with her family still upset with her, she’s been left wondering whether buying her niece the expensive bag dupe in order to humble her was the wrong thing to do.
Do you agree that her niece needed to be humbled? Even so, was buying a fake designer bag the right way to do it? Would it have been better if she had an honest conversation with her niece about entitlement and gratitude? What would you have done in this situation?
